Basis of School Readiness |
Research has proven that children who are healthy and ready to go to Year One will be better able to obtain success compared to children who are less ready or unready. Children who are socially, emotionally, intellectually, physically and spiritually ready to enter school have a head start in learning and thus can respond to the environment more effectively. Just what are the basis of school readiness?
- Children learn through observation. Therefore adults and parents should demonstrate good behavior and examples in front of children. An excellent example is reading out loud to children. This will inculcate good reading habits, reading interests and love of books.
- Whenever one enforces rules and regulations give reasons why there is need for such rules. In addition ensures that the punishment or penalty given to children because of misbehavior must be commensurate with their wrongdoings. Try to practice giving negative reinforcement fairly
- Interact as often with children; talk about everything in the environment such as color, clothes, cars, dresses, food and school.
- Always ask and answer questions. Give open-ended and divergent questions. An example in front of the aquarium one asks “What do you see in the aquarium?” instead of “How many fish are there in the aquarium?”
- Children need rules and routines. This will ensure stability in the environment. It is not advisable to change rules and regulations as one fancy. There is need for consistency so that the child feels peaceful and unthreatened
- Let the child knows you loves him or her everyday and highlight their uniqueness and strengths. This practice will promote their self concept
- Always ask what happens in school or at the preschool. This will indicate your interest in the children’s welfare and gives encouragement to them
